Remove excess fat from hips, thighs, stomachs and love handles
Who is a candidate for Liposuction?
Men and women who are not significantly overweight and who have one or more areas of fat accumulation which will not respond to diet and exercise may be good candidates for liposuction. Good skin tone is important in obtaining a satisfactory result. Liposuction is effective for many areas, but is most commonly used on the hips, thighs, abdomen (tummy), and “love handles.”
How is liposuction performed?
Tiny incisions are made adjacent to the area(s) to be treated. A small tube (cannula) is inserted and a diluted solution of local anaesthetic and adrenaline is injected to decrease bleeding and provide post-operative pain relief. The excess fat is then gently removed via the cannula. Liposuction can often be combined with other procedures (e.g. tummy tuck, breast augmentation).
The surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay is not required. The surgery can take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on how many areas are being treated.
What is the recovery period like?
You will be up and about immediately after surgery. Swelling, bruising and discomfort after surgery is normal for a few days. Dr. Gunjan will prescribe pain medication for you, as well as antibiotics to minimize the chances of infection. You will be able to shower within a few days. The stitches will dissolve naturally.
Depending on your type of work, you may return within one to two weeks of surgery. Although the skin will be healed within a week or so, it will be three or four weeks until full activities can be resumed (i.e., sports or heavy lifting). A support garment is required for one month after surgery to give you the best possible result.
What are the risks?
All surgery carries certain risks and liposuction is no exception. These include bleeding, infection and temporary skin numbness. Skin irregularities and minor asymmetries can occur. Blood clots can occur, but this is rare and steps are taken to minimize this risk. Smoking increases the likelihood of complications and it is therefore strongly recommended that you stop smoking before undergoing liposuction. Dr. Gunjan will review all the risks of the surgery with you in detail during your cosmetic consultation.
